pikkopots, posting in bentolunch @ 1:22am: Bento Central
This is my turkey helper lunch from yesterday in my new Miffy box.

I launched a new bento site today called Bento Central, which is sort of like an online bento newspaper. I'd love it if you all would give it a try!

swissnat, posting in knitting @ 11:26pm: Steggie sleeves
I'm working on Steggie, from Knitty, and I can't quite figure out if I'm making mistakes on the sleeve edging or not. The pattern calls for YO increases at the edge between the MC and CC, and I feel like I should somehow not have any holes there in spite of the YOs. Anyone who's made this- ARE there supposed to be holes between the MC and CC, or is there some way of doing a YO that I'm not aware of that doesn't make holes? Pattern is here:
http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring09/PATTsteggie.php

Note- I am properly twisting the yarns when I switch colors, so the holes aren't from that.
con_grazia, posting in knitting @ 8:38pm: Pints & Purls
Has anyone here made the Snakebite Hat from the book "Pints & Purls"?? You can see a photo of it here on Ravelry:

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/snakebite

The pattern calls for a circular size 10 and then some size 9 DPNs. I don't know if I'm crazy or what, but I've read and reread the pattern a zillion times and can't find anywhere where she wants knitters to switch to the size 9s. You start off the rib brim with the size 10. I know that sometimes you switch to the smaller size after the ribbed brim, but then again sometimes it's with the hat decrease. She doesn't say anywhere, unless I'm blind as a bat (are they really blind?) and I've written her on Ravelry and at her yarn store and haven't gotten an answer. I want to start this thing! So what's your guess, knitters? Switch to size 9 after the initial ribbing and when the stockinette starts? Or switch once the decrease starts? Or don't bother, and knit the whole damn thing with the size 10? Inquiring minds want to know. ;)

And thanks in advance!

aelfie, posting in knitting @ 8:25pm: Question regarding changing weight types of yarn
So I have this simple pattern for a hat that calls for bulky yarn. I have lots of worsted in my stash I'd rather use than run out and spend money. What changes do I need to make to use worsted weight instead of the called for bulky? (assuming that I can)

TIA

Thanks to Christmas, I bought a bunch of non-Patons wool from somewhere other than JoAnn's or Michael's.
In consequence, I knew I would have to wind it into balls and I was able to try out this nifty little design I came across a few months ago.pic behind cut )
lankypanky, posting in housematehorror @ 7:38pm: The lazy, it is driving me nuts.

To be honest, I like Roommate; he is a pretty mellow dude who lets me mess around on his game console pretty much at will.  He just . . . doesn't do anything.  Oh, the immovable object. )

sparklypoof, posting in bentolunch @ 8:04pm: happy new year everyone!!

've been making bentos regularly, and have just gotten lazy w/the picture-taking (however, I am continually amazed and impressed by the quality of bentos shared on here!!). lucky-ducky me, I scored some sweet bento-making lootz for xmas this year, and today was my first day trying them out.

my husband's bento today.

he had a nice feta-topped salad w/a dressing pig in one half, and purple potatoes, chicken nugget halves, and suuuuper-cute sweet-rice shapes (with wee carrot hearts thanks to my new micro-mini cutters!). oooh, I totally added furikake to his rice after I took this pic, and didn't take a new one. dang. imagine that his flower had a little center of seeds, too. :P

my lunch today.

looking at it now, the half on the left looks like a weird face. O_O that was not intended, but is neat! I got the other 2 rice shapes from the set of 4, more purple potatoes, and chicken nugget halves in that container. the other half held baby tomatoes, asparagus topped w/more carrot hearts, carrot and cucumber slices, a raspberry, and a lil' swiss cheese cube.

oh ho ho! funny how new tools result in a renewed spirit of creativity! (btw, if you're curious, I have added all the bentos I haven't shared yet over here to this set, just to get 'em up)

nakedmarmar, posting in bentolunch @ 6:37pm: Bento #9: first bento of 2010, first onigiri, and a new box!
One of my New Year's resolutions is to cook more Asian food. I used to be afraid of making rice, believe it or not, and other than stir frying some vegetables and adding soy sauce, I've never really attempted anything outside my comfort zone of Western cuisine. So here is my first bento to contain onigiri!

They turned out yummy, even if my photography wasn't the best. The one on the left is triangular-shaped and filled with a store-bought furikake. The one on the right is plain.

The top tier contains leftover salmon with a honey mustard glaze and baby carrots. It was a good lunch, but I almost wish I had only packed one onigiri and used the rest of the space for another vegetable or protein.

This was also my first time using a new bento box! )

graverobbing, posting in 20sknitters @ 10:38pm: I'm a comm newbie!
Hey guys! My name is Liz and I found the comm through looking around another knitting-dedicated community. I'm 24, and have picked up knitting a bit more intensely in the past few months after losing my job in September. I've been knitting up a lot of scarves and am currently working on my first blanket and hat in the round after getting the Boye Needlemaster system for my birthday from my mother. Below the cut I'll post some pictures of a few of my finished pieces. I also have an account on Ravelry, where you can find me at blaqkheart!

Finished scarves! )

Anybody have sites they enjoy where I could find some more beginner-esque projects? I'm open to anything!

Variations on a theme... I wasn't home from work until almost 3:30 am, and my imagination had gone to bed by then. So saved by the fact that my kid loves sausage rolls AND it's one of the things that never seem to be out of stock, even late at night in 7-Eleven.. well.. there you are.. another sausage roll-monster...

shoelaceswitch, posting in knitting @ 9:16pm: Hat-A-Palooza and then some
I went on a knitting rampage for the holidays. I've been knitting for a couple of years but this was the first holiday where I attempted to knit gifts for everybody. As such, it was mostly hats b/c hats are quick and easy and I made the decision to knit gifts kind of late in the game. There are a few neckwarmers in there, as well. Everybody loved them which made me 1) super happy and 2) anxious about how much earlier I'll have to start knitting gifts for next year!

Here for FOs! )

kmarier, posting in bentolunch @ 4:57pm: The first bentos of the new year
Happy New Year everyone! First "business" day of the new year and the kidlet and I had a lunch function at school so I splurged and did two charaben to start the New Year right!

My favorite Sanrio character is Badtz Maru so I made myself an onigiri, encased it in nori and cut out the eyes and mouth out of cheese.  Badtz Maru has several sidekicks; the one pictured here is Hana Maru (I think.) who is a molded egg with the face picked out in nori with sesame seeds for eyes. They are surrounded by succotash, Japanese spinach, radish pickles and some gyoza.

Anyone have any tips for fair isle knitting on double pointed needles? It keeps coming out puckered or the stiches are too loose :( Is it just a tension thing that I need to practice??? BTW, the project is fingerless gloves.

skabadger, posting in knitting @ 8:16pm: my 1st project finished :D
YO :) i learned to knit about a week before Christmas..ive always wanted to learn and i was at my aunties at a family gathering. my other auntie was knitting a jumper. i mentioned i wanted to learn, so it turned into a little family project with Auntie A teaching me how to knit, her and Auntie J and my mum helping me do a few rows, me staying up late knitting away (it is definitely addictive) and we made a black headband :) more aunties...2 days before christmas, Auntie G taught me how to cast on. Then my mum taught me how to cast off :) i only know how to knit at the moment, but have just finished another headband all on my own :D next i wanna learn to purl and make it more exciting..but here are some pics of the headband i finished tonight. started it on new years day and did a little bit every day. sorry if im babbling :) knitting excitement! :)

a few photos..i know its not perfect:) )

micka, posting in bentolunch @ 9:06am: Back in action with the New Year!
I'm Back! :D

Made this one for the boyfriend (in celebration of our 2.25 year anniversary) He says he can't wait until lunch time. :)
Left compartment: edamame, baby carrots, cheddar babybel cheese wheel.
Right compartment: hard boiled egg with sesame salt, ham, turkey, turkey pepperoni.

And this one is for me! I can't wait for lunch today, either! :D
Top: baby carrots, grape tomatoes, Athenos Original Hummus.
Bottom: Turkey Pepperoni, hard boiled egg, cheddar babybel cheese wheel, edamame, more grape tomatoes, and a bear container filled with Tony Chachere's for the egg. :D

I need to make a freezer stash of "crustless quiches" (also known as mini-frittatas), and figure out some other stuff to give me variety and quick turnaround. Even though I went grocery shopping yesterday, I stood at my fridge for a long time trying to figure out what to use.

Any suggestions?

So, I came home for Xmas break and somehow forgot my needles back at uni.  AHHHHH!!!!!

The only needles I had were from my last project, size 15 circulars with a 24 inch strand.  So I could only make large things with super bulky yarn. Below the cut is the rest of my story and several pics.

(Also, this is my first post, so let me know if I did any of this wrong...)
